Ages ago, someone found and shared the website of Weight Watchers recipe cards, circa 1974. I still cry with laughter when I read them today.

Kurt and I have our favorite:


These are three words that should NEVER go together. (And notice that this recipe falls under the "Convenience Fish" category. Fish can be so inconvenient, can't they?)

The one that had gasping for breath was this one (all are best read with the snarky comments from Wendy McClure)


Something about "Impressive Buoys" just kills me. And this category is great "Fish Spectaculars"!!!11

This one we laughed and laughed about -- WTF is Shashlik? -- Until I went to Macedonia on business and ordered Shashlik on the menu. (No reference to Caucasions in Skopje, though.) Delicious when made in a country that has shashlik in it's culinary history.



By the way, Ms. McClure has published a book with even MORE of the crazy recipes. The book is called: "Gee, your book smells terrific!"

The reason I thought of these aweseome food cards today is because Boing Boing pointed me to a site called Do What Now? with old recipes, ads and other retro-wacky stuff. For some reason this one made me spit on my monitor I was laughing so hard:


Trout is not as funny as Mackerel, and yet, something about wrapping them in corn husks just made me lose it.

Lastly, from the weight watchers card site is the link to the Gallery of Regrettable Food. You know it's going to be good and I see that you are now scheduling yourself some alone time so you can look at them all.

Summer time is here and our tomatoes are plump and ripe and deeeelicious! And we have so many and it is so hot that gazpacho is the answer.

So we cleaned out our emergency kit today and for fun and a laugh recycled our can of spam for dinner. (Turkey spam, not the original.)

We were speaking of it, weren't we? Yes, indeed. We got the Dean & DeLuca catalog in the mail yesterday. It should be labeled with this:



We got a gift certificate to D&D as a wedding gift, lo those (almost) six years ago and ordered up a few things. And we have gotten the catalog ever since. I have greatly reduced the number catalogs that come to the house, but I can't give up Dean and Deluca. There is no good reason to keep getting it because it's too expensive, totally not "green" and really, we need to be eating better anyway. But oh, the images. So sexy.

We put our new BBQ to it's second test on Friday night. Threw on some pork ribs from TJs and aspargus from ParadiseO.


In all honesty, the ribs were just a bit too dry when finished, but hey, we are learning the ways of a gas grill. And it certainly didn't stop us from chowing down. Tasty! Next time we know to make the heat lower...I love the ease of the gas grill and cooking outside on these warm summer nights. Can you hear me sighing with relaxed pleasure? Aaaaaahhhhhhh.

Thanks to this post on LAist, Kurt and I were inspired to sign up with ParadiseO. Today was our first delivery and we got this:




I washed the head of lettuce really well. This is not the triple washed in a bag stuff! I have to on the ball with these items as they are organic and not from a factory. Can't wait to eat it all up.

For lunch Kurt and I went non-organic and ate cheeseburgers and fries at our favorite In-N-Out Burger at the airport. There were plenty of parents and kids pic-nicing in the small park watching planes land (which is why we went to that one.) I always love a 747 coming almost right over your head at about 150 feet.

Did a little gardening, watered the tomatoes and fixed some sprinklers. Nice day!

Oh and it all started off with a trip to the Multi-Plex with my good friend Sarah to see Ocean's 13. We had to contain ourselves when Jacquie Barnbrook had her scene!!! GO Jacquie!

After Reading to Kids yesterday, Debra and I stopped at Govinda's Buffet for a yummy lunch near our homes in West LA. You must go. It is $7 for all you can eat buffet and all the food is made fresh in their kitchen. The menu is all vegetarian with many vegan choices as well. There is Pizza, a beautiful salad bar, many entrees, two kinds of rice, cookies and vegan cakes. There are sandwiches as well. And it is all soooooo tasty. You can sit indoors or out on their large umbrella covered patio.

You haven't heard of Govinda's? Or you have but have been afraid to try it because it is part of the Hare Krishna temple? Be honest now....

Just go there and eat delicious soul satisfying food. And after you are done eating you can go and buy indian clothes and books and candles and jewelry and shoes and decorative items for your home in their import store.

Don't worry, it is nothing like Scientology. Nobody pays you any attention at Govinda's except to smile and help you have a great meal.

I spent a lovely afternoon with my good friend Shana today, starting with lunch at El Huarache Azteca #1 in her neighborhood of Highland Park. (Click on that link to go to Jonathan Gold's review of it. He didn't win a Pulitzer Prize for nothing!)

We returned to her house where we found her sweet housemate, hanging out (click to see her up close):

It reminded me of the nest sitaution (and minor tragedy) at Will's house in Los Feliz a short while back. You can read all about it here and here and finally, here.

In Shana's backyard is a peach tree:

I have never eaten a peach right off a tree and my oh my, how delicious it was! Shana sent me home with a bunch of them (as well as a big bag of lemons -- thanks Shana!) so I could do this with them for dessert tonight. I had to stop and get some vanilla ice cream as well. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I came home and put them in a bowl so you can ogle the sexy fruit.
